LRE’s Support Helps Rail Trail Connect Ohio Communities
March 12, 2026
LRE is committed to creating meaningful connections in the communities where we operate. From volunteerism to partnerships, our community efforts focus on supporting what matters most locally.
In Madison County, Ohio, home to our Big Plain Solar facility, that commitment is helping strengthen a key segment of the Ohio to Erie Trail.
The Friends of Madison County Parks and Trails, FMCPT, an all-volunteer nonprofit organization, maintains a 14-mile bike and hiking trail through the county seat of London. This section is part of the 326-mile Ohio to Erie Trail, which stretches from Cincinnati to Cleveland and links the Ohio River to Lake Erie.
LRE and Big Plain Solar have long supported FMCPT, including funding a 16-panel art mural project that highlights the history of London and Madison County. Painted by a local artist on the bricked-over windows of a former factory along the trail, the murals, including one featuring a solar energy field, have become a popular stop for visitors.
“The murals were one of several improvements that have made the Madison County portion a popular stop,” said Dr. Gregg Alexander, Board President of FMCPT. “We appreciated LRE’s contribution. They have been a good friend to FMCPT.”
In addition to the murals, FMCPT has added trail-side camping sites, bike repair stations, native Ohio plantings, and secure restroom facilities. The Madison County segment now attracts more than 70,000 bicyclists and walkers annually, including visitors from 47 states and 27 countries.
The organization is currently working to close a gap in the trail through London. Today, riders must use city streets to travel between the east and west portions. FMCPT is partnering with the Madison County Park District and Norfolk Southern Railroad to acquire a soon-to-be-abandoned rail spur to create a safer and seamless connection.
“Closing the gap is a major priority,” Dr. Alexander said. “Once we close the gap, we will be even more closely connected to the full trail and the state of Ohio.”
Through partnerships like this, LRE continues to support projects that strengthen local recreation, economic vitality, and community pride.
